Korean Movie: My Black Mini Dress (마이 블랙 미니드레스)

(This was originally posted on my wordpress blog)

Released in March 2011, My Black Mini Dress (MBMD) stars Yoon Eun Hye (윤은혜) as Yoo Min, Park Han Byul (박한별) as Hye JI, Cha Ye Ryeon (차예련) as Soo Jin, and Yoo In Na (유인나) as Min Hee.
Honestly I have no idea where to even begin with this movie. With the main female leads, there was tons of hype and excitement for this movie. MBMD is somewhere between boring and boring with rare interesting moments. It is basically about four college friends who have just graduated and going on with their lives hiding their own personal problems. Rather than leaning on each other, as friends should, they try to face their problems on their own and of course in the end they realize what friends are for and the bond between them strengthen. Cliché? Yes and although MBMD was able to make the characters and plot different, it was not interesting enough. Despite the fact that the cast acted well, it did not help the plot itself, so I would give this movie a C-. An okay movie but not worth the watch ^.~

Ps. Other dramas I watched with the actresses are “Coffee Prince” (Yoon Eun Hye), “Secret Garden” (Yoo In Na), “Couple or Trouble” (Park Han Byul), and “Dr. Champ” (Cha Ye Ryeon).

Korean Movie: Architecture 101 (건축학개론)

Architecture 101 aka Introduction to Architecture was released in March 2012. This Korean movie stars Uhm Tae Woong (엄태웅) and Lee Je Hoon (이제훈) as the older and younger version, respectively, of Lee Seung Min. The character Yang Seo Yeon is played by Han Ga In (한가인) and Bae Suzy (배수지).  The movie is another flashback film and follows the story of first loves, Lee Seung Min and Yang Seo Yeon who met in Architecture 101 as freshman in college.  They meet again after twenty or so years, Yang Seo Yeon now divorced seeking to hire the engaged architect Lee Seung Min, to rebuild her family’s home on Jeju Island.
From what I heard this movie was popular and did quite well in Korea, however I personally would give the overall movie a B. There was so much hype for the movie and positive reviews, but I did not really enjoy the movie as compared to the hype it got. The movie was dry in some areas but overall the plot was good. The chemistry was amazing between all the characters and really showed innocent first love.  I definitely enjoyed the movie and recommend you watch it.

PS. To see the actors/actresses in other good dramas check out “Dream High” (Suzy), Queen Seon Deok” (Uhm Tae Woong), and “The Moon that Embraces the Sun” (Han Ga In). All three of the dramas that I listed were enjoyable and my personal favorite (with the exception of “Dream High” which is not really a favorite but pretty good). The only drama that I saw with Lee Je Hoon was “Fashion King” whose acting was decent but the drama itself was very slow and ultimately not worth the watch – but if you enjoyed his performance in “Architecture 101” feel free to watch this drama! ^.~

Korean Drama: Big (빅)

(This was originally posted on my wordpress blog)

The Korean Drama for today is titled “Big” (빅) and stars Gong Yoo(공유) as Kang Kyung Joon/Seo Yoon Jae, Lee Min Jung(이민정) as Gil Da Ran, Shin Won Ho(신원호) as Kang Kyung Joon, and from the popular k-pop group Miss A, Suzy(배수지) as Jang Ma Ri. In this drama there is a spirit swap and a non-dramatic love triangle. Gil Da Ran is the teacher of high school student Kang Kyung Joon and the fiancé of Seo Yoon Jae. However Kang Kyung Joon and Seo Yoon Jae share a connection and their spirits get swapped. So the actor who plays the high school Kang Kyung Joon, Shin Won Ho, just lies in a coma for the vast majority of the drama. Jang Ma Ri is in love with Kang Kyung Joon and tries to keep the Kyung Joon Spirit inside Seo Yoon Jae’s body from falling in love with Gil Da Ran.
Confused? To make it simpler it’s like Freaky Friday except the other party is in a coma, there is a small love triangle, throw in some sad moments with lots of laughter and you got the Korean drama, “Big.”
With only 16 episodes, this drama is short compared to the average 20-24 episodes most dramas tend to be. It starts off slow, gets funny, and then slowly gets boring again. Overall, I would personally give this drama a C+. The actors were great with amazing chemistry but the drama plot itself was definitely lacking. With all the other great dramas that are playing, this is one that you do not have to watch (unless you have plenty of free time or just a fan of the actors ^.~).

Ps. If you want to see other dramas that the main leads, Gong Yoo and Lee Min Jung, have been in before then do check out “The 1st Shop of Coffee Prince” and “Smile, You.” Although the dramas came out 2007 and 2009, respectively, they were both amazing and are actually the dramas that help the popularity of both actors increase.
